Part I. Reading the scriptures with the mind of the Church (September 24th): The holy scriptures are one of God’s most important gifts to man. The Holy Bible is the greatest story ever told and a revelation of God’s love and plan for humanity. The scriptures are more than just a historical overview of major events in the history of salvation, they are a reflection of our personal relationship with God. But, let’s be honest, the scriptures can be difficult to read and interpret. As Catholics we are blessed, however, to have over 2000 years of teaching and tradition which shed light on some of the most hidden mysteries in the scriptures. I am excited to offer the parishioners of Divine Mercy a brief overview of how to read the scriptures with the mind of the Church.
Part II. Lectio Divina: the treasure of the Church at prayer (September 25th): As you know well the scriptures are the living and breathing word of God. They are “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing the division of soul and spirit…and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Heb 4:12). The scriptures, therefore, are indispensable to our spiritual lives. Christians everywhere must take the word of God to prayer and learn to pray with and through the sacred scriptures. I am excited to offer a brief introduction and insight into the Church’s great tradition of Lectio Divina, which has been used for centuries to foster and nourish the interior life of all who pray with the word of God.
